    Snow Removal

A list of questions explaining the City of New Meadows Snow Removal Process

When are the streets of New Meadows plowed?
The streets of New Meadows are plowed when snow accumulation reaches 4” in the downtown corridor and snow is removed when it reaches a depth of 6” on side streets.  The crew begins around 2 a.m. seven days a week.

Why is downtown different then the rest of the town?
Downtown is different as the State of Idaho plows Virginia Street.  The city removes the snow that accumulates from the State plowing along with normal snowfall.

    What streets are plowed first?
The streets that lead to the school are plowed first to allow for busses, vehicles, and other traffic.  These streets are considered main arteries.  Alleyways are cleared last.

What type of equipment is used?
The city uses; front end loaders, backhoes, road graders, winged road graders, and a dump truck outfitted with a snow plow to remove snow from the streets.

How many miles of streets are plowed?
The City of New Meadows plows approximately 6 miles of streets.

    Where are the roads sanded?
The City of New Meadows does not routinely sand the roads.  The roads are mainly sanded at intersections that meet with Highway 95.

Where does the city store the snow it removes?

Snow is stored in vacant lots throughout the community.

Who is responsible for clearing the snow from the fire hydrants?
Fire hydrants are cleared by City of New Meadows Public Works department.  It is encouraged that residents try to keep the snow from the hydrants to ensure adequate fire protection needs.  Fire hydrants can be “adopted” by anyone willing to keep the hydrant free from snow and ice.

Is parking allowed on the streets during the winter?
It is illegal to park on the city right of way on side streets (ANYTIME) or in the downtown corridor of New Meadows at any time of the year after 2 a.m.  This hampers the snow removal process and could cause your vehicle to be ticketed and towed at your expense.

Who is responsible for sidewalks and the berm at my driveway?
The property owner is responsible for all snow removal from the sidewalks that border the property.  The snow left in the “berm” is the responsibility of the property owner / resident as well.

Can the berm be placed in the roadway for the next time the plow comes by?
No.  This issue causes a safety issue.  The plow may not be back for several days.  Further it is unlawful to deposit snow from private property onto any public street or right of way.

Are there any other special circumstances New Meadows residents should be aware of?
Yes.  Mailboxes and trash cans may become plowed over if not properly marked or are in city right of way.

How can I help the city with its snow removal efforts?
Generally you can help by making sure that your vehicles are not parked in the right of way at any time.  Snow accumulation can occur at anytime, and as soon as plausable, staff will be out to remove it in an economical and safe manner.
